Keita is an elite marathoner from the fictionalized nation of Zantoroland. The novel follows Keita as he flees Zantoroland following the murder of his journalist father, targeted for his outspoken political opinions. Keita is forced to flee his native country and arrives illegally in the wealthy Nation of Freedom State, where undocumented citizens are quickly captured and deported. Keita becomes part of an underground community, living by means obtained by running in local races and the prayer he will not be recognized as a refugee. When his sister gets kidnapped, he must find a way to pay her ransom, while eluding authorities. The Illegal is a fast-paced, intricately written novel by the author of The Book of Negroes.
