DIY: How to make your own Spooky Cemetarium

There is nothing better to me than the kick off to the Spooky Season! As the days start to turn cooler, the dark comes earlier, and the decorations start to come out we get to turn towards a new type of crafting. The CREEPY CRAFT!

On October 1st, Winchester Branch held a DIY craft event, during which patrons of all ages created Spooky Cemetariums. Everyone got the opportunity to paint 3D prints made at the Library and put together this special type of terrarium.

It was quite boo-tastic!  Here are the steps you will need to make your very own:

Materials

  • Bowl / Cloche
  • Ground and/or Sand
  • Spooky decorations
  • Moss (can be live moss or preserved)
  • Craft Rocks (optional)
  • Craft paint & water (optional)
  • Paper towel (optional)
  • Twigs/Bark (optional)

Instructions

If you have a 3D print and/or other decoration that you need to paint start with step 1. If not begin with step 2.

  1.  Start by adding some paint with some water to help thin it. Paint your decoration then wipe it with your paper towel to help give it a weathered look and to dry it a bit faster. Set your decorations to the side.
  2. In your bowl layer your sand/soil to your desired height.
  3. Place your decorations inside the bowl
  4. Add in your moss and craft rocks
  5. Add additional decorations
  6. Step back and admire your creation!

*Moss Care If using live moss, make sure to keep it away from sunlight and regularly mist it. If you use both live and preserved moss, be careful when misting to only do it on the live moss or mold will occur.

Have a great time making these and remember if spooky season is not your thing this can easily be changed out to suit a different holiday as well.

Happy Crafting!
