Embracing Our Roots: I Read Canadian Day at the SDG Library

Welcome, book lovers, to an exciting day at the SDG Library! Today, November 8th, 2023, is I Read Canadian Day, an initiative celebrating the incredible talent and diverse voices found in Canadian books. In this blog post, we’ll dive into what this movement is about, why it’s important, and how you can join us in championing Canadian literature.

What is I Read Canadian Day?

I Read Canadian Day is a nationwide celebration that encourages young people to read and support Canadian books. This initiative aims to foster a deeper appreciation for our national literary talent and showcase the rich tapestry of voices that make up the Canadian literacy landscape.

Why I Read Canadian Matters:

Celebrating Diversity: Canada is a beautifully diverse nation, and its literature reflects this richness. Through the I Read Canadian initiative, we have the opportunity to explore stories that resonate with our own experiences and those that offer windows into the lives of others.
Supporting Local Authors: Canadian authors contribute significantly to the global literary scene, offering unique perspectives on a wide range of topics. By participating in this initiative, we can help shine a spotlight on these talented individuals and grow the genre, fostering a thriving community.
Fostering a Love of Reading: Reading Canadian literature can be a transformative experience for all ages. It allows us to connect with our cultural heritage, appreciate the beauty of our landscape, and explore complex issues that shape our society.

How You Can Get Involved:

Explore our Collection: Visit your local SDG Library Branch to discover our Canadian Collection (look for the Canada Flag stickers on the spine of books), and check out our I Read Canadian Day Staff Book List below for young readers. Whether it’s in person or online, have fun exploring award-winning novels, captivating picture books, and graphic novels.
Engage with Canadian Literature: Write a book review! We encourage readers of all ages to engage with the stories they are reading. What an excellent opportunity to grow comprehension skills and become confident readers and writers.
Share Your Reads on Social Media: Spread the word about your favourite Canadian Books! Use the hashtag #IReadCanadianDay and tag the SDG Library in your post to join the conversation and connect with fellow book enthusiasts.
