It's time to Connect, Create & Explore with nature!
Nature can be found in your backyard, a local park, or conservation area. It could be a frog sitting on a lily pad, a butterfly resting on a flower, leaves blowing in the wind or a bird flying in the sky. Research indicates that time spent in nature is connected to cognitive and mental health benefits, as well as improvements in mood and emotional well-being.
Children and youth who spend time in nature have been shown to improve academically, have better attention spans, are more physically active and are better able to cope with everyday life. Nature can also help develop observation and problem-solving skills as well as promote emotional and intellectual development. Children who are allowed to play in nature tend to be less aggressive and more cooperative. They get along better with friends and are overall happier than children who spend their time indoors.
So how can we encourage children to spend more time in nature, exploring and learning?
Check out our Nature Backpacks. Our staff created several themed bilingual backpacks to encourage families to spend time outdoors and learn more about the world around us. Each kit contains various books, activities, resources in both English and French as well as equipment to help develop new skills and knowledge.
We currently have six kits available and will be adding more throughout the year. Search the catalogue, opens a new window and place a hold today.
