Books by BIPOC Authors
For the second month of our second annual reading challenge, we invite you to pick up books written by BIPOC authors. This acronym is an umbrella term standing for Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour, which recognizes the systemic struggles faced by Black and Indigenous peoples. This term has gained traction within literary spheres as a way to highlight the perspectives of visible minorities and allow for publicists, publishers, librarians, and readers alike to become more conscientious about diversity within the books and media they engage with.
BIPOC authors continue to be recognized for their contributions to the field: Black authors incorporate facets of the past and future to create genre bending works known as Afrofuturism, Indigenous authors who use fiction and the motif of red dresses and handprints to draw attention to the continued struggle of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, East-Asian authors who create in-depth fantasy worlds based on their cultural folktales and mythology, Latinx and South-Asian authors who use cookbooks to tell their families' stories through homemade meals and desserts. Regardless of your preferred genre, there is a vast selection of books by BIPOC authors for you to read!
To participate in this month's SDG reading challenge, choose any book by a BIPOC author. Then, please share your thoughts on social media or an image of the book you've chosen and tag us - #SDGReadingChallenge. We love to see what books you've chosen.
